PHĀEA PLAN BEE

Our apiculture initiative, Phāea Plan Bee nurtures adami honeybees across nine hives. A breed that has been buzzing since Minoan times, they’re managed organically by our expert keeper, who feeds knowledge and techniques back to the Beekeeping Cooperative of Heraklion. It’s estimated these important pollinators are responsible for one out of every three bites of food we eat, so you can see why we have a bee in our bonnet about protecting and promoting this precious species. And it gives us 40kg of the most flavorsome vitamin-rich honey, too.

At sunup the bees head out for the day's work, and they busily come and go all day. In the late afternoon and early evening you'll sometimes see the bees hanging around on the outside of their hive. (That happens because the inside of the hive can become uncomfortably hot!) The Phāea Plan Bee-cam operates in Blue Palace Resort, Elounda and in one of our Phāea Farmers field, at Malia, which are on Eastern European Time, full of daylight!

Besides the season, what you'll see here also depends on the weather and the time of day. From early spring to late fall, the bees are quite active. Worker bees fly out in search of pollen and nectar, guard bees keep would-be intruders out of the hive, undertaker bees lay their dead to rest, and much more!
